‘Win-win’: exiled Thai critic mocks authorities after textb…
Thailand has banned a textbook about the country on national security grounds, with the tome’s exiled editor saying on Thursday it was outlawed over its content on the Thai monarchy. The royal family holds revered status in Thai society and is shielded from criticism by a strict defamation law that critics say is used to muzzle dissent. The book, a second edition of the Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Thailand published in English in August, was edited by Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a prominent...

Philippine police probe Meghan’s brother as Markle child ab…
Philippine investigators are examining whether Thomas Markle Jnr, the half-brother of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was involved in alleged child sexual abuse offences as an investigation into their father widens, according to the country’s interior secretary on Thursday. Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla said witnesses had alleged that underage girls were brought to the younger Markle’s home. Markle Jnr was being treated as a “person of interest”, not a suspect, Remulla told reporters...

The former prince Andrew has been called to testify as a witness in a civil fraud trial, marking what is believed to be the first time in more than 150 years that a member of the royal family has received a witness summons, British media reported on Wednesday. Philippine police said on Wednesday that three memory cards and a mobile phone turned over by the son of Meghan Markle’s estranged father contained child sexual abuse material. Last week, Philippine police said they were investigating a laptop found alongside images of child abuse at an alleged former residence of Thomas Markle, whose daughter is married to Britain’s Prince Harry. Philippine interior minister Jonvic Remulla said at the time the country planned to take “appropriate legal actions”...

UK minister hints at formal slavery apology but says payout…
Britain’s Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has said it was “not feasible” for the country to pay reparations for slavery, after King Charles III expressed remorse amid calls for a formal apology and compensation. “It’s not the right answer. It’s not practical. It’s not feasible for us, but there are things we can work on cooperatively,” Miliband told the BBC in an interview aired on Wednesday. He added that London would not “shift our position on reparations”. Miliband also hinted that Britain...

UK’s King Charles calls slavery ‘monstrous injustice’, as P…
King Charles called the transatlantic slave trade “a monstrous injustice” on Tuesday, opening a Commonwealth summit in which UK leader Andy Burnham is holding talks about apologising for Britain’s role in slavery. The monarch told the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda that slavery “still casts a shadow over these islands and other members” of the 56-nation group, many of which are former British colonies. “As I have said before, that shameful chapter of history is...

Indian royals carve out new calling decades after losing th…
In a sprawling palace in western India, the “queen” or Maharani of Baroda welcomes guests with fragrant rose petals, presenting torchlit dances of Hindu myths. Dressed in glittering finery, Radhikaraje Gaekwad is a queen in name only, a modern businesswoman presiding over a world her ancestors once ruled. “The key has been that we have adapted,” the 48-year-old said in her vast Lakshmi Vilas Palace, describing how India’s former royals have found new roles, from cultural ambassadors to...
