As I see it | The new Canada is much like the old one
I came of age in Canada during the Pierre Trudeau years – the Trudeau whom Canadians actually respect – as a high school student from Hong Kong. From New York to Hong Kong, 6 independent cinemas defying c…
Not long ago, Cinéma La Clef, one of Paris’s most historic independent cinemas, faced closure. Founded in the 1970s, the movie theatre was an epicentre for the city’s art-house filmmaking yet its owners decided to put it up for sale in 2018 and the end credits seemed nigh. But then the film world responded, vocally and with their money. The result? A newly formed collective acquired La Clef in 2024 and earlier this year it was reopened. “Independent cinemas like this one have always been...

Mother, 72, on trial in France over 1980s torture killing o…
A 72-year-old woman on Monday went on trial in France accused of torturing her four-year-old daughter to death in the 1980s, after a DNA match reopened the cold case. The main defendant walked briskly, head dropped and face hidden with a scarf, as she left the courtroom in the town of Blois at lunchtime, pursued by child rights activists crying “shame” and calling for justice. Her husband, a 74-year-old from whom she is now separated, earlier struggled up the courthouse’s steps with a cane,...
