TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The National Science and Technology Council said Saturday it achieved a historic breakthrough by concluding a Science, Innovation and Technology Arrangement with the UK.
The agreement covers cooperation in satellite communications, silicon photonics exchanges, and internships in Taiwan for semiconductor researchers from the UK, the council said in a statement. Taiwan envoy to the UK Vincent Yao and UK representative in Taipei Ruth Bradley-Jones signed the arrangement in London Friday.
The groundwork for the agreement originated with talks between Council Minister Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文) and UK Minister for Space, Cyber and Regulatory Reform Baroness Lloyd of Effra in London earlier this year. After Friday’s signing, both sides discussed the first wave of cooperation projects under the new agreement, the council said.
The UK Space Agency proposed joint research and development in advanced satellite communications technology with the Taiwan Space Agency. Separately, the UK will provide seed funding for a Silicon Photonics Academic Alliance, a platform for talent exchanges and cooperation between industry and academics. An initiative to have UK master’s students in semiconductor studies undertake internships in Taiwan will continue.
The arrangement opens a new win-win chapter in technology cooperation between Taiwan and the UK, according to the council.
